The Adventures of Philips the Kitten in a Fairy-Tale Land
A visit from a hedgehog opens a path into Lesogoria — and a small kitten learns that bravery begins with kindness.
A Doorway Beneath a Tree
Philips is a young house kitten, comfortable with family life and full of questions about the world beyond his garden. One spring day he meets Veron, an independent hedgehog whose stories sound impossible. Veron comes from Lesogoria, a country of forests, mountains, rivers and lakes where animals talk, make their own decisions and live under the protection of the Silver Eagle. A hidden passage beneath a tree can take a traveller there, provided the right magic words are spoken. Curiosity wins over caution, and Philips follows his new acquaintance into the unknown.
For the first time, the kitten must get by without his humans. He discovers a community far richer and more complicated than he imagined. Veron's family welcomes him; Aunt Musya and her young fox Wutty, the lynx Rozerna and the dog Bul become part of his widening circle of friends. Philips is surprised to find that life in an enchanted country still includes everyday problems: misunderstanding, loneliness, frightened children, lost homes and animals who need help.
The Meaning of Friendship
A storm strikes Lesogoria, tearing through the trees and forcing animals to seek shelter. Bul loses his old dwelling and struggles to adjust. Rather than abandon him to worry, the friends work together to find a solution. Their efforts show Philips what it means to belong to a community: a problem shared can become a problem solved.
The adventures bring the kitten into contact with all kinds of creatures. He listens to their stories, learns how disagreements are settled and begins to see that appearance and reputation can be misleading. This becomes especially important when he hears about Jacques-Reno, the crocodile in the lake. Many residents fear him, calling him a dragon or dinosaur and warning children to stay away.
The Crocodile Nobody Understood
Instead of repeating the rumours, Philips approaches Jacques. He discovers that the apparently terrifying crocodile is gentle and unbearably lonely. No one has cared to ask what he is really like. Philips dares to befriend him, and their unlikely companionship slowly transforms life around the lake. Other animals begin to visit; children even ride happily on Jacques's back. The creature once rejected by his neighbours finally finds a place among them.
The Silver Eagle recognises that Philips has accomplished something remarkable, not by force but by overcoming fear and treating a stranger fairly. The country celebrates the kitten's courage and his ability to bring creatures together.
Home, and the Promise of Return
Yet even the happiest adventure cannot erase homesickness. With help from the wise ram Burynix, Philips receives a magical Sun Flower and learns a rhyme that can carry him back to the human world. When he returns to his garden, he is astonished to discover that what felt like a long absence in Lesogoria has lasted only a single day at home. Time moves differently in the two worlds.
Philips is reunited with the family dog Polkan. Veron, too, finds his way back to Lesogoria. The friends must part, but the magic flower leaves open the promise of future visits. Philips returns as the same small black-and-white kitten, yet his understanding of friendship has changed: the bravest thing he has done was to see a friend where everyone else saw a monster.
